On this episode we share our first impressions of the 2022 Acura MDX, and how this long standing name plate competes with other three-row SUVs in its segment. Consumer Reports, in collaboration with IIHS, recently released a list of safe and reliable new and used cars for teen drivers, and we discuss the criteria to make the list, as well as share our personal picks for which vehicles we would recommend. Other topics include: Electric vehicles for post-covid commuting; why the auto industry lacks standardization for manual modes on shifters; why some car manufacturers are more proactive in implementing new technology and making updates to their vehicles than others; and how to safely transport a pet in a vehicle.

This week we talk about our test results of the 2021 Kia Sorento: how it handled on our track, as a family car, and how it compares to others in its class, such as the Toyota Highlander and Kia Telluride. We also talk to CR investigative reporter Ryan Felton about his findings regarding an RV and camper tire made by Goodyear that has been linked to numerous crashes and deaths, and offers advice on how to identify an old tire, and when they must be replaced. We also cover whether a dealer can terminate the manufacturer's warranty on a vehicle if it is not serviced by the dealership, if recalls are signs of a car to avoid, or indicate a responsible automaker, and how safe are 3rd row seats in modern cars.

#306 2021 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray First Impressions; Why is This Smart Car Trying to Tow Anything?
We recently welcomed the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray into our test fleet, and we share our first impressions on its driving dynamics, styling, and interior drawbacks. Also, with Corvette always giving buyers more performance per dollar than other automakers, we compare how this first ever mid-engine Corvette compares to other, more exotic sports cars, like Ferraris and Lamborghinis. We also discuss whether Rivian's new Adventure charging network will accommodate other manufacturer's EVs, or be proprietary like Tesla Superchargers. Other topics include: which SUV is best suited for an adventurous family; is it wise to replace original larger wheels on a vehicle with a smaller size; and if a Smart car is capable of towing.

#305 We Answer Questions About Our Recent Tesla Coverage; 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Test Results
This week, we address some of the comments posted online about our experiment to see if a Tesla would drive with no one in the driver's seat. We also share our test results of the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, discuss the scarcity of the Kia Telluride, if owners are able to replace LED daytime running lights on their own, a smart maintenance schedule for a car driven 4 miles a day in an urban environment, and why new cars aren't as inexpensive as the Ford Model T was in the 1920s.

We share our first impressions of the 2022 Hyundai Tucson, discussing how much this 4th-generation compact SUV has evolved, and if it is a worthy competitor to the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. Also, Hyundai has unveiled its all-new compact pickup-truck this week, the 2022 Santa Cruz, and we discuss where this tiny truck fits within the pickup segment, and which demographic Hyundai is targeting. This week's topics also include whether retreading tires is a greener choice than purchasing new ones; which key features to consider when purchasing a vehicle for a hot climate; and how often cars get damaged at the Consumer Reports Auto Test Center.

We recently completed testing on the 2021 Genesis GV80, and this week we share how this all-new SUV from Hyundai's luxury brand performed. What keeps you comfortable when you're behind the wheel? This week we discuss our comfort must-haves when driving, as well as our personal pet peeves that drive us crazy! Other topics on this episode include crash testing on female body types, potential safety hazards when driving an electric vehicle through a flooded road, and whether buying a used upscale car or leasing a new, more affordable car makes more financial sense for a recent college grad.

This week we drove the all-new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander, and we share our first impressions on the interior styling, and how it handled on our track. Rivian, the fledgling electric truck and SUV nameplate, just announced a plan to install EV chargers at places known for outdoor recreation: state parks and campsites. We talk about how this plan differentiates it from other automakers, and whether it's enough to stand out in a market dominated by Tesla. We also discuss the potential resale value of gas-powered cars in a future that could be dominated by hybrids, why cars from different brands that share a parent company might have a big difference in quality, and the best way to judge a car for long-term comfort during a test drive.

This week we rented the 2022 Kia Carnival, and share our first impressions on its unique styling, utility, driving dynamics, and how it compares to the Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey, and Chrysler Pacifica. We also examine why people are spending more on new vehicles, and what is driving the average car prices so high. We also discuss whether it is wise to sell an older vehicle and purchase a brand new one; if panoramic sunroofs are less safe in a rollover crash; when to consider purchasing an extended warranty on a new car; and which safety features are a must when exploring a conversion van build #VanLife.

This week we share our first impressions of the 2021 Buick Envision, and discuss where it’s built and how that affects its driving dynamics in comparison to other luxury compact SUVs like the Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Mercedes-Benz GLC. We also examine vehicle destination fees, discuss why these ballooning delivery charges may add to the cost of your new car, and point out which manufacturers are the biggest offenders of driving up the cost. Other topics include: the discrepancy between a tire pressure gauge and the car's TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system); differences between CR's brand report card and J.D. Power's brand rankings, and how to interpret all that data; and we explain how CR compensates for rain, air, and ground temperatures during brake-distance testing.

This week, we give our first impressions on Volkswagen's all-electric ID.4 small SUV. We discuss the ID.4's unique styling, how it compares to the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model 3 and Y, and how VW's Electrify America charging network will need to make improvements to compete with other EV charging infrastructures. We also discuss the predicted reliability of the recently announced Kia Carnival minivan, that replaces the Sedona in Kia's lineup. We also discuss the recall of Tesla's touchscreens, and whether these components have a short lifespan; how Consumer Reports calculates electric vehicle range; and advice on how to manage a lease when you REALLY want to be driving a different car. The Bronco name is back, and this week we share our first impressions on the all-new 2021 Ford Bronco Sport, catering to those looking for a rugged, off-road capable vehicle. We discuss how the small SUV, sibling of the larger Bronco, handles rocks and mud, as well as its engine performance and interior comfort. Chevrolet announced an updated version of its all-electric Bolt and an all-new Bolt EUV. We discuss the key changes for the Bolt EV, and how the inclusion of GM's Super Cruise active driving assistance system might appeal to those interested in Tesla's Autopilot system. We also talk about the right time to cut your losses on a vehicle that needs constant repairs, if Consumer Reports is considering testing 3-wheeled BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicle) like Arcimoto and Aptera, why all-weather tires are not as popular as all-seasons, and we wonder which of our neighbors lost their emu.

CR recently bought the very first car released by Polestar, the performance brand from parent company Volvo. The Polestar 2 is an all-electric hatchback built to compete with other luxury EVs like the Tesla Model 3 and Audi e-tron, and we share our first impressions on what we found taking it on the open road, as well as our test track. Nissan recently announced a redesigned Frontier pickup truck and Pathfinder SUV, and we ask the big question: what took so long?! Other topics this week include why a dealership might offer you above market value for your used car or leased vehicle, if it's wise to purchase a vehicle that was recently discontinued, a fun-to-drive car that can accommodate two child seats, and if an imported Kei car would make a sensible car for driving around town.

We've completed testing of our 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime, and discuss how this plug-in hybrid performed, and why it might outshine the Subaru Crosstrek Plug-in Hybrid. Apple made automotive news recently concerning the potential development of an Apple-branded car produced by Hyundai; we discuss these reports, and consider the many ways the auto industry and big tech companies are converging to impact the car market. Other topics include the Toyota Yaris GR, if a hitch-mounted bike rack could prematurely age your car's springs, and whether adaptive cruise control has an impact on fuel efficiency.

We recently rented a BMW M440i xDrive, and this week we give our first impressions of how this sporty coupe performed on the highway and at our track. We also offer advice on whether you should skip test drives due to COVID-19, if an Audi Q3 or Volvo XC40 is better for a city-dweller, the performance of winter run-flat tires, why some cars in Canada and Europe never make it to the US, and why importing a foreign car might be prohibitively expensive.

Every year, Consumer Reports releases the results of its auto reliability survey, collecting data from hundreds of thousands of our members. We share the process of collecting this data, as well as some highlights from this year's results. The 2020 Land Rover Defender is a recent addition to our test program, and we share our first impressions on this resurrected and rugged luxury off-roader SUV. We also answer questions about NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) shields on cars, possible solutions to end a burdensome car lease, and at what point a child can safely ride in a vehicle without a booster seat.

We recently got a chance to drive the 2021 Genesis G80 at our test track, and we share our impressions on how the sedan from Hyundai's luxury brand performed, as well as how it compares to other vehicles in its class, like the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and Volvo S90. Filling your tires with nitrogen is an option offered by many dealerships and mechanics these days, usually for an added expense. We talk about whether this is something to consider, as well as if it's safe to put regular air into a tire filled with nitrogen. Winter weather is on its way (if it hasn't already arrived where you are!), so we discuss the best way to prep your car for hitting the road when there's ice and snow. We also give advice about replacing a Hyundai Elantra with an Audi A4 (or other alternatives like the Mazda3, Honda Civic Sport, or Toyota Camry?!) And with an increasing number of cars on the road having the ability to update their software, how is Consumer Reports adjusting its testing program to stay on top of the latest versions and features? Do the scores change when a car with GM's Super Cruise or vehicles from Tesla receive a new update? We discuss how we are adapting our testing to account for these new technologies, and more.

With winter on its way, many people are asking: what are the benefits of winter tires vs. a set of all-seasons? The popularity of online, no-haggle car services like Carvana, CarMax, and CarSense has grown in recent months, but can you really get a good deal without visiting a car dealership and negotiating on price? We discuss using these services to buy a new or used car, as well as the high cost of replacement key fobs; the benefits of using premium fuel over regular in cars like the Volkswagen GTI and Mazda CX-9; the emergence of sometimes confusing electronic shifters from carmakers like BMW, Volvo, and Genesis; how CR awards points for standard advanced safety features, and if a Mazda6 is a good replacement for a dad who is losing his Acura TL to his teenage drivers.

We recently purchased the 2020 Audi Q7, so this week we discuss what's new in the freshening of this 3-row midsize SUV, give our take on the new dual screen infotainment system, and how it compares to competitors like the Mercedes-Benz GLS and the BMW X7. Also, with hurricane season in full swing, we talk about precautions drivers should consider when driving in heavy rain, what to do if you encounter flooded roads, and share some telltale signs a car might have been previously flooded when shopping for a used car. We also consider which sportback would be the best fit for a family vehicle, if shifting into neutral at traffic lights can save on gas (or potentially harm your vehicle,) and options for a fuel efficient subcompact SUV or a compact pickup truck to serve as a daily driver.

#269 2020 BMW 2 Series First Impressions; Why Manufacturers Shouldn't Charge a Premium for Safety Features
This week we give our first impressions of the 2020 BMW 228i xDrive Gran Coupe, discuss its driving characteristics, and how it compares to its competitors, like the Genesis G70. CR has released a new study which finds that on many vehicles important advanced safety features like AEB (Automatic Emergency Braking) and FCW (Forward Collision Warning) are only available in expensive optional packages, and paired with less crucial amenities (such as sunroofs and heated seats.) We talk about the importance of these life saving systems, and why they should be standard on every car. We also answer questions about the safety of Tesla’s chargers and other home EV chargers in wet, rainy conditions; why tires could become noisy after they are rotated; and suggest a fun, manual transmission car for a teen driver under $15k.

This week we give our first impressions of the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer, and talk about how it compares to the last outgoing model, and why this small SUV might have created a new size category for Chevy. Consumer Reports has teamed up with the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (or IIHS for short) to recommend safe, reliable used cars and SUVs that are well-suited for teenage drivers, and cost $20k or less; our panel explains why this is an important market for buyers today, and which cars they would choose off the list. Also, we help a viewer decide between a new Toyota Venza hybrid and Toyota RAV4 Prime to replace his high-mileage Toyota Highlander, explain why all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicles require all four tires to be changed at the same time, and pick a car we think would be perfect for a long trip to Mars.

This week we share our test results of the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, and discuss if the compact luxury SUV retains the swagger the brand is known for. Also, Ford has unveiled its brand new Bronco for 2021! We run through all the specs, pricing, the numerous trim levels (with names like Black Diamond, Badlands, and Sasquatch!) and talk about the nostalgia that the Bronco name plate brings. We wrap up with audience questions about retrofitting your vehicle with wireless Apple CarPlay, whether buying a plug-in hybrid like the Toyota RAV4 Prime is a good buy if you don't have access to a charging station, replacements for a college graduate's Hyundai Elantra (SUV or pickup truck?), and how to start a career in the automotive journalism industry.

(The only car I would not buy is the Supra.) But why did you not choose at least one Porsche, Genesis or Mazda in your Top Picks? I personally believe the Genesis G80 and Mazda 3 are really good buys. 18:18 - Question #2: Steve | West Chester, PA; I'd love to buy a car from an American brand, like Ford or Chevrolet. However, my own experience, and your reliability rankings tell me that these cars will typically be much less reliable. Reliability and longevity are the top criteria for me. How can American nameplates have such poor reliability year after year? Why aren't they learning how to do this? They are keeping away those of us who don't want to spend money on repairs or spend our time at the dealership. 20:39 - Question #3: Ray | Henderson, NV; Many of the newest cars, including my Audi A6, have a sport or dynamic drive mode. This seems to increase the RPMs in the vehicle, and I was wondering if it’s safe to keep the car in this mode at all times. Does it affect engine or transmission reliability? Plus, we answer audience questions about crash tests, the performance of different size winter tires, and if leaving a sunroof cracked open will help keep a car cool. ————————————————— Subscribe to Talking Cars on Apple Podcasts! We're on location at the LA Auto Show where we discuss three of the big trends we saw on the show floor — the continuation of all-electric debuts, including the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the Mercedes-Benz EQC, and the Audi e-tron Sportback; The explosion of all-new small and compact SUVs, like the Kia Seltos, Mazda CX-30, and Chevrolet Trailblazer; and the changing perception of what's considered a performance car, with examples such as the Audi RS6 Avant, Toyota Avalon TRD, and the Tesla Model 3. We also give our impressions of the updated fuel cell-powered Toyota Mirai, Land Rover Defender, Nissan Sentra, and choose our personal favorites of the show. ————————————————— Subscribe to Talking Cars on Apple Podcasts! We recently rented two very expensive cars to try out at our test track: the 2019 BMW M850i, and the 2020 Bentley Bentayga. While these high-end cars are too rare for CR to purchase and formally enter into our test program, we share our impressions of these cars, and whether these six figure vehicles deliver an experience worthy of their sky high price tags. We also discuss the possible merger of Fiat Chrysler with French automaker Peugeot, and how past automaker mergers and alliances have affected consumers. In this week's audience questions segment, we explain the science behind snow tire performance in wet conditions, choose a mid-life crisis car for an outdoor enthusiast, and tell you why you definitely should not test your car's automatic emergency braking (AEB) system at home. ————————————————— Subscribe to Talking Cars on Apple Podcasts! We just bought a 2020 Cadillac XT6 for testing at the track, and we give our first impressions on the midsized SUV, including how it stacks up against other 3-row competitors (including its big brother, the Escalade.) Volkswagen has ended production on some of the last station wagons in the US market, the Golf Alltrack and SportWagen; we analyze why many wagons are being discontinued, and what they are being replaced with. We also answer audience questions about the ideal driving conditions for a dual-clutch transmission, the use of advanced safety features in inclement weather, and why you might see a lot of soot on the tailpipe of a direct injection turbo.

Tesla has been in the news a lot recently, with announcements about price drops and increases, new Autopilot functionality, stores closing (or not,) and the availability of the long-promised $35,000 Model 3. What should a consumer make of all this? Our experts give advice on what to do if you're questioning whether a Tesla makes sense for you. We recently purchased the new 2019 BMW 3 Series, and we give our first impressions of what it's like behind the wheel. We end this episode with audience questions about Jaguar XJ and Dodge Charger reliability, how we weight a car's performance based on its intended use, and the machinations behind issuing a car safety recall.

Porsche has finally redesigned its Cayenne SUV, and we discuss our overall impressions, and how it performed in our tests. Wet weather can have a significant impact on how tires perform, and the problem only gets worse as a tire ages. CR recently conducted a test on how tires with low tread depth handled in our wet braking and hydroplaning courses, and why a tire from Michelin impressed us. We also answer audience questions about the 2019 Toyota RAV4, how long it takes us to fully test a vehicle, and whether changing a new car’s tires and shocks is a good idea. This week's episode is all about reliability! Each year, Consumer Reports surveys its members about their vehicles to find out how their cars are performing in day to day, real world use. From major engine issues to frustrating infotainment problems, data is collected to find out how vehicles perform over the years. Once we crunch the numbers, we are able to determine which cars and brands are running smoothly, or giving owners constant issues. We go over some of the worst performing cars in our survey, and answer viewer questions about reliability issues they are currently experiencing. Have a question for our experts?
